Adult Vision Assessment – What to Expect and Why It Takes Longer
At Harmony Vision, our adult vision assessments look beyond a quick check of “can I see the letters on the chart?” They are for adults whose vision or visual comfort is affecting work, study, driving, or day‑to‑day life, or who are looking for someone who spends time to fully investigate and explain their vision and eye health.
Who our adult appointments are for
This longer assessment is often a good fit if you:
- Have eye strain, headaches, or fatigue with reading or computer work.
- Notice difficulty focusing, variable blur, or visual instability.
- Struggle with night driving, glare, or visual comfort.
- You still feel you don’t have a clear explanation for what you’re experiencing with your vision.
We also see many adults who simply want a more thorough understanding of how their vision is working, not just whether they need a new pair of glasses.
What we assess (beyond a quick sight test)
In addition to checking clarity of sight and eye health, your optometrist will look at how your visual system functions as a whole. This may include:
- Eye health, including retinal imaging, pressures, and scans where indicated.
- How well the eyes work together (eye teaming and binocular vision).
- Tracking and eye movement efficiency.
- Focusing skills at different distances.
- Visual comfort and stamina over time.
- How your vision supports reading, driving, screen use, and everyday tasks.
This takes more time than a short, bulk‑billed appointment because it is designed to understand why you feel the way you do, not just whether you can read a line of letters.
Why we do not bulk bill
We are a private‑billing practice and do not bulk bill. This is because our consultations are longer and include additional testing that is not possible within a short, bulk‑billed time slot.
Current fees and Medicare rebates for this appointment are explained when you book and in your confirmation email. We always discuss any additional costs with you before proceeding.
Any additional testing or treatment options are always discussed with you before proceeding, so you can make an informed decision.
What happens after the appointment
At the end of your consultation, your optometrist will explain:
- What we found.
- How your vision may be contributing to your symptoms or concerns.
- Whether glasses, contact lenses, task‑specific lenses, visual strategies, further testing, or review is recommended.
You will have time to ask questions so you understand your options and next steps.
