School‑Aged Children’s Vision Assessment – What to Expect and Why It Takes Longer
At Harmony Vision, our school‑aged children’s vision assessments look beyond a quick check of “can they see the letters on the chart?” They are for children whose vision or visual comfort may be affecting their reading, learning, attention, or day‑to‑day comfort, or for families wanting a more thorough look at how vision is supporting school and life.
Who are children's vision appointment is for
- This longer assessment is often a good fit if your child:
- Has difficulties with reading, copying from the board, or keeping their place.
- Complains of headaches, sore eyes, or fatigue with near work.
- Struggles to concentrate on written tasks or avoids them.
- Has had eye checks before, but you still feel you don’t have a clear explanation for how vision might be affecting their learning or comfort.
We also see many children whose parents, teachers, tutors, or other health professionals want a more in‑depth understanding of how vision is working, not just whether glasses are needed.
What we assess (beyond a quick sight test)
In addition to checking clarity of sight and eye health, your child’s optometrist will look at how their visual system functions as a whole. This may include:
- How well the eyes work together as a team (eye teaming and binocular vision).
- Eye tracking and reading‑related eye movements.
- Focusing skills at near and distance.
- How efficiently the eye muscles work and how quickly they fatigue.
- Visual development and visual processing skills.
- How vision is supporting reading, attention, and comfort in day‑to‑day life.
This takes more time than a short, bulk‑billed appointment because it is designed to understand why your child is experiencing these difficulties, not just how small they can read on a chart.
Why we do not bulk bill
We are a private‑billing practice and do not bulk bill. This is because our consultations are longer and include additional testing that is not possible within a short, bulk‑billed time slot.
Current fees and Medicare rebates for this appointment are explained when you book and in your confirmation email. We always discuss any additional costs with you before proceeding, so you can make an informed decision.
What happens after the appointment
At the end of your child’s consultation, your optometrist will explain:
- What we found.
- How your child’s vision may be contributing to their symptoms, learning, or comfort.
- Whether glasses, visual hygiene strategies, learning supports, office‑based therapy, further testing, or review is recommended.
- For school aged children we provide a written report of their results.
You will have time to ask questions so you understand your child’s situation, options, and next steps
