When your child receives a vision screening referral through school or VIS-CAT, it is normal to feel unsure about what to do next. These screenings are helpful, but they are not full eye examinations. Their role is to flag students who may benefit from a more detailed assessment.
Harmony Vision provides comprehensive clinical vision care for children who have received a referral from school screening programs, VIS-CAT screenings or teacher concerns.
We are an independent optometry practice. Screening programs refer to any APHRA registered optometrist for follow up. Our clinical training allows us to assess and manage children from these screenings, and children's vision is a big part of our practice.
What are school vision screenings and VIS-CAT?
School vision screenings
These are quick checks performed at school to identify students who may need further assessment. They typically assess vision clarity and basic visual tasks.
VIS-CAT screening
VIS-CAT is a computer based screening tool used by some schools and health professionals to identify potential visual processing difficulties. It is not a diagnostic test. A referral indicates that a more detailed clinical assessment is recommended.
Both programs are designed to ensure no child is missed. A referral simply means a closer look is needed.

What we assess in a full childrens vision examination
A comprehensive assessment at Harmony Vision includes:
- Distance and near vision
- Focusing accuracy and stamina
- How the two eyes team together
- Depth perception
- Eye movements used for reading, copying and sports
- Visual comfort during sustained near tasks
- Ocular health including the front and back of the eye
- Age appropriate functional/perceptual vision testing where indicated
You will receive clear explanations and practical next steps based on your child’s needs.
What happens after the assessment?
Outcomes vary depending on the findings. Your child may need:
- Prescription glasses for clarity or comfort
- Monitoring and review to track development
